Prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as a benign prostate disease, is a common disease in elderly men and often manifests as frequent urination, hematuria, and difficulty urinating. Overactive bladder (OAB) refers to a group of syndromes consisting of symptoms such as urge incontinence, urinary urgency, and frequent urination. It is also a necessary condition for determining bladder instability. It is currently a popular drug for treating prostatic hyperplasia and male pattern baldness, but do you really know about the drug finasteride?

Finasteride, as a 5α-reductase inhibitor, can specifically compete with 5α-reductase to block the synthesis of dihydrotestosterone, thereby inhibiting BPH. At the same time, finasteride can also induce prostate cell apoptosis, reduce blood vessel formation in prostate tissue, and reduce the adhesion function between prostate epithelium, further strengthening the therapeutic effect on BPH.

Among the diagnosed and treated patients with BPH and OAB, 108 cases were selected as research subjects. All were treated with drugs and divided into different groups according to different dosage regimens: those who were treated with M-receptor antagonists alone were set as the control group, and those who were treated with finasteride and M-receptor antagonists were set as the observation group. There were 54 cases in each group. The treatment effects of BPH with OAB and the incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups.

Results: After treatment, the International Prostate Symptom Score (PSS) and Overactive Bladder Score (0ABSS) of the observation group were lower than those of the control group; the incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group was lower than that of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).

It is concluded that finasteride and M receptor antagonists are effective, safe and reliable in the treatment of BPH accompanied by OAB.
