[Drug Name] Deferasirox, Enrig, Deferasirox

[Indications for Desirox] It is used to treat chronic iron overload caused by frequent blood transfusions (monthly dosage of concentrated red blood cells ≥7mL/kg) in patients with β-thalassemia older than 6 years old;

For children under 6 years old and iron overload caused by other transfusion-dependent diseases, the safety and effectiveness data of Enrig in Chinese patients are limited, and it is recommended to use it with caution based on the specific conditions of the patients.

[Desirox usage and dosage] Recommended for patients with iron accumulation, such as those who require long-term blood transfusion (blood transfusion volume up to 100 ml/kg) and whose serum ferritin exceeds 1000 μg/L; corresponding to body weight.

At the initial stage of taking Desirox dispersible tablets: It is recommended to take Desirox at a daily dose of 20 mg/kg. Depending on the improvement of serum ferritin indicators, patients may need to adjust or increase the dose of Desirox. Generally, the dose will be increased in units of 5 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg, but the total dose should not exceed 30 mg/kg per day.

Desirox dispersible tablets should not be taken with medications containing aluminum (such as stomach acid neutralizers). Therefore, patients need to follow the doctor’s advice when taking medication.

[Desirox Side Effects] Common side effects: diarrhea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain, fever, rash, increased serum creatinine (Creatinine), etc.

Other side effects: increased liver enzymes, cough, throat irritation, hives.

【Desirox Precautions】

1. Do not use if you are allergic or sensitive to any component of Desirox.

2. Most reactions appear in the first month of treatment. Liver function should be checked regularly while taking Desirox.

3. In some cases, patients with fatal reactions may develop renal failure. Patients with renal failure or who are at great risk for renal failure should have periodic kidney function tests while taking this medicine. People at risk for kidney failure include the elderly, people with kidney disease, and people taking medications that affect kidney function. Dosage adjustments may be necessary.
