(febuxostat), as a relatively new selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, can effectively reduce uric acid levels and has high safety. Previous research results suggest that febuxostat is effective in treating gout patients. So, for gout patients, how long does it take to stop taking febuxostat?

Under normal circumstances, patients treated with febuxostat for about 6 months can clean up excess blood uric acid in the body and achieve ideal therapeutic effects. The APEX study is a key study to evaluate the clinical efficacy of febuxostat and is also the largest study on gout to date. In this study, 1,072 gout patients (with normal or slightly reduced renal function) were randomly divided into 5 groups, namely: febuxostat (80, 120, 240 mg per day) group, allopurinol (100-300 mg per day) group and placebo group, and continued treatment for 28 weeks. At 28 weeks, the proportions of patients in the five groups with blood uric acid levels reduced to less than 6 mg/dL were 48%, 65%, 69%, 22% and 0 respectively. Compared with the allopurinol group, the febuxostat group had a higher proportion of patients with blood uric acid levels reduced to less than 6 mg/dL, while the allopurinol group was better than the placebo group.

Although 34 patients experienced serious adverse reactions, 33 cases were not related to drug use, and only 1 patient (febuxostat 240 mg group) experienced drug-related renal damage. Other treatment-related adverse reactions include abnormal liver function, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between groups.

Studies suggest that (febuxostat) is more effective in reducing blood uric acid levels in patients compared with allopurinol and placebo. In this regard, patients can purchase and use it with confidence.
