Febuxostat is generally used as a drug to lower uric acid during the remission phase of gout. However, acute attacks of gout may occur while taking febuxostat. This is because febuxostat has a strong uric acid-lowering effect. If the dose of febuxostat is too high, the uric acid in the blood will drop sharply, which will cause the tophi deposited in the joints to turn into crystals and dissolve. The dissolved crystals will cause immune cells to attack, produce inflammation, and cause joint pain and gout.
