In October 2008, Febuxostat was approved for marketing by European EMEA under the trade name "Adenuric". In February 2009, Febuxostat was approved by the US FDA for marketing under the trade name "ULORIC". In June 2013, febuxostat was approved by the China State Food and Drug Administration for marketing in China. 

What does Febuxotan treat?

Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor and is suitable for the long-term treatment of hyperuricemia with gout symptoms. Febuxostat is not recommended for the treatment of patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia.

In addition, patients taking febuxostat need to understand drug-drug interactions:

1. Hydrochlorothiazide: No dose adjustment required

Thiazide diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide, indopamide) can increase serum uric acid concentrations. Patients with hypertension and hyperuricemia should avoid taking thiazide diuretics as much as possible. 

2. Azathioprine or mercaptopurine: combined use is prohibited

Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that reduces serum uric acid concentration by inhibiting uric acid synthesis. Febuxostat may increase plasma concentrations of azathioprine or mercaptopurine, resulting in toxicity. 

3. Theophylline: Monitor the blood concentration of theophylline

Febuxostat may increase the plasma concentrations of theophylline. The inhibitory effect of febuxostat on xanthine oxidase can lead to an approximately 400-fold increase in the urinary excretion of 1-methylxanthine (a major metabolite of theophylline). 

4. Statins: Pay attention to muscle toxicity

There were 3 patients who had been taking statin hypolipidemic drugs for many years (one case each of rosuvastatin, atorvastatin and simvastatin). They developed symptoms of rhabdomyolysis after adding febuxostat. After recovery, they did not relapse after taking statins again.
