What types of epilepsy patients is Vigabatrin (vigabatrin) suitable for?
Vigabatrin (Vigabatrin) is an antiepileptic drug that enhances GABA concentrations in the central nervous system by inhibiting gamma-aminobutyric acid aminotransferase (GABA-T ). Its unique mechanism of action makes it effective in some special types of epilepsy, especially for patients who do not respond well to other conventional anti-epileptic drugs.
First of all, Vigabatrin is widely used to treat infantile spasms (West syndrome), especially in patients with infantile spasms caused by tuberous sclerosis. Studies have shown that this drug can significantly reduce the frequency of seizures and even achieve complete control of spasms in some infants and young children. It is one of the first-line recommended drugs for infantile spasms.

Secondly, Vigabatrin is also suitable for refractory complex partial epilepsy (focal seizures). For adult patients who have tried multiple conventional anti-epileptic drugs but have failed, Vigabatrin can significantly improve seizure control as adjuvant therapy. Among this group of people, it is particularly suitable for patients with structural abnormalities in the brain or a long history of epilepsy.
Despite its definite efficacy, Vigabatrin is not suitable for use in all types of epilepsy, especially for generalized tonic -clonic seizures (grand mal seizures) or absence seizures. It has limited effect and may even aggravate the seizures. In addition, there is a risk of irreversible visual field loss with long-term use, so careful evaluation before use and regular visual inspections should be performed. In short, Vigabatrin is suitable for patients with specific types of epilepsy, and its use requires strict individualized evaluation and monitoring under the guidance of a neurologist.
