Is aprocitentan a new drug for treating insomnia?
Aprocitentan (Aprocitentan) is not a new drug used to treat insomnia. It is actually a drug specifically designed to control refractory hypertension. This drug is an endothelin receptor antagonist, which mainly acts on the endothelin -1 (ET-1) pathway, by blocking ETA and ETB receptors, thereby dilating blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. Its main purpose is to provide new treatment options for patients whose blood pressure cannot be effectively controlled despite taking three or more antihypertensive drugs. Therefore, aprexitentan does not have a sleep-aid function and is not approved for the treatment of insomnia.
Although some patients with hypertension may develop sleep disorders during long-term treatment, the drug mechanism used to treat insomnia is completely different from that of aprecitentan. Common drugs for treating insomnia include melatonin, benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepine sedatives, and certain antidepressants, which mainly work by regulating the sleep mechanism of the central nervous system. The pharmacological effects of aprecitentan do not affect nerve conduction or the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, so it cannot improve sleep quality and will not be used by doctors to treat insomnia.
At present, aprexitentan is not yet available in the country and still needs to be obtained through overseas channels. It has been approved in some countries for the treatment of refractory hypertension, and a generic version has been launched in the Laos market with a relatively low price, only a few hundred yuan per bottle. This undoubtedly provides an economical and practical treatment option for patients who truly need antihypertensive treatment. However, for patients with sleep disorders, the use of aprecitentan cannot help sleep, and may even affect sleep due to side effects or interactions with other drugs.
In summary, aprecitentan is not a new drug for the treatment of insomnia, but a new endothelin dual receptor antagonist specifically targeted at refractory hypertension. Before using drugs, patients should clarify their indications and use them rationally under the guidance of a professional doctor. If you are treating insomnia, you should choose drugs with clear sleep-aiding mechanisms and indications, rather than blindly trying drugs that have nothing to do with insomnia.
