What are the common side effects of using pomalidomide?
Pomalidomide(Pomalidomide) is an oral immunomodulator mainly used to treat multiple myeloma, especially in patients who have progressed after treatment with lenalidomide and proteasome inhibitors. As a structural analog of Lenalidomide, pomalidomide mechanistically strengthens the dual effects of immunomodulation and anti-tumor. However, along with its efficacy, are its potential side effects. Understanding these common adverse reactions is important to using this medicine safely.

In practical applications, the side effects of pomalidomide are somewhat common and predictable, with the most common toxic reactions related to the blood system, especially neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Such side effects will affect the patient's immune system and increase the risk of infection and bleeding. Therefore, during the medication process, blood routine needs to be monitored regularly, and the dosage should be adjusted or treatment suspended according to the guidance of the doctor. In severe cases, supportive therapy may need to be combined with leukocyte or platelet elevation.
Secondly, anemia is another common hematological adverse reaction, manifesting as fatigue, dizziness or palpitations. Although the mechanism of pomalidomide itself does not directly disrupt erythropoiesis, it may still cause a decrease in red blood cell numbers due to an overall suppressive effect on the bone marrow. Such situations also require close monitoring and symptomatic treatment as appropriate.
On the nonhematological side, fatigue is one of the most commonly reported complaints by patients. This kind of fatigue is often persistent and difficult to relieve, which may be related to the interference of drug metabolism on the body's energy allocation. At the same time, digestive system reactions such as nausea, constipation or diarrhea are also common and can generally be improved by adjusting diet, increasing water intake or using symptomatic drugs.
