What kind of medicine is Acemini? New hope for leukemia patients
Asciminib is a novel small molecule targeted drug used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) , especially in those patients who have developed resistance to traditional treatments. It was developed by Novartis. As a targeted therapy drug, Asiminib treats CML by selectively inhibiting the BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase. This tyrosine kinase is extremely active in cancer cells of CML patients and is a key factor in the proliferation and growth of leukemia cells.

Different from traditional CML treatment drugs such as Imatinib, Dasatinib, and Nilotinib, Asiminib has a more unique mechanism of action. It not only inhibits BCR-ABL1 kinase, but also selectively targets special subtypes of ABL1 kinase, especially the T315I mutant BCR-ABL1, which usually produces resistance to traditional drugs. Therefore, aceminib offers new hope for CML patients who are resistant to traditional treatments.
Treatment of CML often relies on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which control leukemia progression by inhibiting the BCR-ABL1 kinase. However, about 30% to 40% of CML patients may become resistant to existing TKI drugs, especially the emergence of the T315I mutation, making conventional drugs ineffective in treating the disease. Aceminib was developed to address this problem. It can effectively overcome this resistance and significantly delay the progression of the disease.
In clinical trials, aceminib has shown encouraging efficacy. Especially in CML patients who failed imatinib, the therapeutic effect of aceminib exceeded expectations. Some patients achieved complete molecular response (CMR) after several months of treatment, that is, the molecular level of leukemia completely disappeared, showing its great potential in controlling the disease.
