What is teriparatide injection?

Teriparatide injection (Teriparatide) is a drug used to treat osteoporosis. Its main component is recombinant human parathyroid hormone (PTH 1-34), which is a fragment of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and promotes bone formation by simulating the effects of parathyroid hormone. The drug is used clinically to treat patients at increased risk of fractures due to osteoporosis, specifically those at higher risk for fractures.

The mechanism of action of teriparatide is mainly by stimulating bone formation and increasing bone density. It can improve the condition of osteoporosis by promoting the activity of osteoblasts (cells responsible for bone formation) and enhancing bone mineralization. Unlike traditional bone density drugs, teriparatide injection is a treatment with an osteogenic effect, while other drugs usually reduce the risk of fractures by inhibiting bone resorption.

When using teriparatide, patients are usually recommended to be injected subcutaneously once a day, and the course of treatment generally does not exceed two years. The injection dose and usage period need to be strictly followed by the doctor's recommendations and personalized adjustments based on the patient's specific conditions. Because of its mechanism of action, teriparatide is often used to treat patients who have already experienced a fracture or are at very high risk for fracture, especially in patients with osteoporosis that cannot be effectively controlled with oral medications.

It should be noted that although teriparatide can effectively increase bone density, it is not suitable for all patients. This drug should be avoided in patients with hypercalcemia or other metabolic diseases. In addition, long-term use of teriparatide may cause some side effects, such as nausea, headache, joint pain, etc. Therefore, blood calcium levels and bone density changes need to be regularly monitored during use to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
