Is Trientine a targeted drug?
Trientine (Trientine) does not belong to the category of targeted drugs. Targeted drugs usually refer to drugs that can interfere with specific molecular targets or signaling pathways. They are usually used to treat certain types of cancer or other diseases by selectively affecting the growth and survival of diseased cells to achieve therapeutic purposes. The mechanism of action of trientine is different.
Trientine is a copper chelator mainly used to treat Wilson's disease, a disorder of copper metabolism caused by genetic factors. In patients with Wilson's disease, due to genetic mutations, the liver cannot effectively remove excess copper from the body, causing copper to accumulate in the liver and other tissues, leading to various clinical symptoms such as liver damage and neurological problems. Trientine forms a stable complex by combining with excess copper ions in the body, thereby increasing the excretion of copper, helping to reduce the level of copper in the body and mitigating toxic reactions caused by copper accumulation.
Although trientine is highly effective in treating Wilson's disease, it does not rely on a specific molecular target or receptor, but instead achieves its therapeutic effects through non-specific chemical reactions. This mechanism allows trientine to be widely used in patients who need to reduce copper levels in the body, rather than being limited to a specific cell or tissue. Therefore, in terms of drug classification, trientine is more suitable to be regarded as a basic treatment drug rather than a targeted drug.
In addition, the use of trientine is not without side effects. Patients need to follow the guidance of their doctor when using this drug and conduct regular monitoring to evaluate its efficacy and possible adverse reactions. Common side effects include gastrointestinal upset, rash, and possible effects on kidney function.
