Instructions for use of Trientine
Trientine(Trientine) is a drug used to treat hepatolenticular degeneration (Wilson's disease), mainly used in patients with penicillamine intolerance. Wilson's disease is a hereditary disease (rare disease) due to abnormal copper metabolism that leads to accumulation of copper in the body. Long-term untreatment can lead to damage to the liver, nervous system and other organs. The function of trientine is to promote the excretion of copper by combining with excess copper ions in the body, thereby reducing the accumulation of copper, alleviating the patient's symptoms and preventing disease progression.
1. Indications
Trientine is suitable for use in children and adult patients ≥5 years old, especially those who are allergic or intolerant to penicillamine. Penicillamine is a conventional treatment for Wilson's disease, but some patients are unable to continue using it due to side effects and allergic reactions. For these patients, trientine is an effective alternative.
2. Usage and dosage
1. Adult patients: The starting dose of trientine is usually the lowest recommended dose and is adjusted based on the patient's clinical response. The usual dosage is 800-1600mg/day, taken orally in 2 to 4 times. Dosage may be adjusted based on patient's weight, symptoms, and response to treatment. It is recommended to take it on an empty stomach, at least one hour before food, other medications or milk.
2. Pediatric patients: The dose for children is lower than that for adults, and the specific dose is determined based on age and weight. The starting dose is usually 400-1000mg/day, taken in 2 to 3 divided doses. As in adults, dosage should be adjusted based on clinical response.
3. Administration method: Trientine is an oral drug. Patients should swallow the capsule whole with water. It must be taken on an empty stomach. It is recommended to take it one hour before or two hours after meals. To ensure effectiveness, patients should avoid taking it with food, other medications, or milk and keep it at least one hour apart.
