Possible side effects of Atrasentan and how to deal with them
Atrasentan (atrasentan) is a selective endothelinA receptor antagonist, mainly used to treat primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy. It works by inhibiting endothelinA receptors, thereby reducing inflammation and fibrotic processes in the kidneys. However, although atrasentan is effective in treating primary IgA nephropathy and other related diseases, a series of side effects may still occur during its use, and patients need to deal with it reasonably under the guidance of a doctor.

First, one of the most common side effects is edema. Because the mechanism of action of atrasentan may affect the permeability of blood vessels, causing fluid to accumulate in tissues, patients may suffer from lower limb edema, ascites, etc. To deal with this side effect, doctors usually monitor the patient's weight and limb edema, and may relieve symptoms by using diuretics if necessary. Also, dose adjustment or temporary discontinuation of atrasentan may be part of the treatment strategy.
Secondly, atrasentan may cause changes in blood pressure, especially in the early stages of taking the drug, and some patients may experience hypotension or hypertension. This is due to atrasentan's effects on blood vessels, which may cause them to dilate or contract erratically. For patients who develop low blood pressure, doctors may recommend reducing the dose or increasing salt intake to increase blood pressure. If the patient's blood pressure continues to be unstable, the medication regimen may need to be adjusted and managed in combination with other antihypertensive medications.
Abnormal liver function is also a concern when using atrasentan. This drug may be somewhat toxic to the liver, especially with long-term use. While patients are taking atrasentan, they usually need to undergo regular liver function tests, such as monitoring of serum aminotransferases and bilirubin. Once obvious liver function abnormalities occur, such as jaundice, fatigue and other symptoms, it may be necessary to suspend or discontinue the drug, and further evaluate the patient's liver function status.
