Can postmenopausal women take fezolinetant for night sweats?
Postmenopausal night sweats are one of the most common symptoms of menopausal syndrome. They are similar in nature to hot flashes. They are mainly caused by the sudden drop in estrogen levels, which destroys the stability of the hypothalamic temperature control center, leading to an overreaction in temperature regulation. In the past, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was often used clinically to relieve these symptoms, but some patients are unable to use hormone drugs due to the risk of breast, uterine or cardiovascular disease. Fezolinetant, as a non-hormonal oral drug, has brought a new treatment direction to postmenopausal women with night sweats.
Fizonatant blocks neurokinin3 receptors (NK3R) and directly acts on the KNDy neuron group in the hypothalamus to rebalance the excitement of the body temperature center. This mechanism can effectively reduce night sweating, repeated awakenings and sleep disorders caused by abnormal regulation of body temperature. Therefore, for postmenopausal women with recurrent night sweats, affected night sleep, and hot flashes, filazonatant is currently one of the more ideal choices. Compared with traditional HRT, it does not contain any estrogen components, will not increase endometrium or breast-related risks, and will not affect sex hormone levels in the body, making it safer.
Judging from clinical experience, postmenopausal women have significantly reduced the frequency and intensity of night sweats after using fezonatant, and the patients' subjective sleep quality has improved. Both the U.S. FDA and the European Medicines Agency recognize the therapeutic value of this drug and consider it a new milestone in non-hormonal menopausal treatment. Fezonatant can be useful in women who have experienced natural menopause, surgical menopause, or premature ovarian failure due to cancer treatment.
However, the use of fezonatant still needs to be done under the guidance of a doctor. For patients with impaired liver function or long-term use of drugs that affect liver metabolism, liver function evaluation should be performed first. Although the drug is well tolerated, a small number of people may experience reactions such as mild headache, insomnia, or stomach upset, which usually resolve on their own in the short term.
