Can't I stop taking lansoprazole/daclopron once I start taking it?
Many patients worry about drug dependence after long-term use of lansoprazole/daclopron(Lansoprazole). In fact, lansoprazole is not a drug that must be taken continuously for life. The duration of drug use depends primarily on the specific disease type, severity of symptoms, and individual patient response. For short-term attacks of acute gastric ulcer or gastroesophageal reflux disease, the usual course of treatment is 4 to 8 weeks. After the symptoms are relieved, the medication can be gradually stopped under the guidance of a doctor. During the withdrawal process, some patients may experience the so-called "acid rebound" phenomenon. This is mainly due to the short-term increase in secretion of gastric parietal cells caused by long-term acid suppression. However, this reaction is usually temporary, the symptoms are mild and can be managed, and does not affect long-term safety.

For patients with chronic or recurring acid-related diseases, such as chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease or Helicobacter pylori infection who still experience hyperacidity, doctors may recommend intermittent or low-dose maintenance therapy. By individually adjusting the dosage and medication frequency, symptoms can be controlled while avoiding possible adverse reactions caused by long-term continuous medication. For example, long-term acid suppression may cause vitamin B12 deficiency, magnesium deficiency, decreased bone density, or intestinal flora imbalance.
Discontinuation strategies usually include gradually reducing the dose or extending the dosing interval to allow gastric acid secretion to gradually resume while reducing the discomfort of acid rebound. Patients should pay attention to dietary management during the withdrawal process, avoid irritating foods and drinks, such as coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, and high-fat diets, while maintaining a regular schedule and moderate exercise to help balance gastric acid secretion.
In general, the use of lansoprazole is not "once you start, you cannot stop". The key is to follow the doctor's instructions and stop the drug scientifically according to the condition and course of treatment. Reasonable drug withdrawal management can not only maintain the efficacy, but also reduce the risk of drug dependence and potential adverse reactions, providing patients with a safe and effective long-term gastric acid management plan.
