What does Donepezil Hydrochloride Tablets do?

Donepezil (Donepezil) selectively and reversibly inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which normally breaks down acetylcholine. The main pharmacological effect of this drug is thought to be the result of inhibition of this enzyme, enhancing cholinergic transmission and thereby alleviating Alzheimer's symptoms. In addition, other mechanisms of action of donepezil are possible, including antagonizing glutamate-induced excitatory transmission through downregulation of NMDA receptors and modulation of amyloid, which has been shown to have a significant impact on the disease process of Alzheimer's disease. Other possible targets of donepezil may also include inhibiting various inflammatory signaling pathways and exerting neuroprotective effects.
