Dimethyl fumarate (Tecfidera) is a drug used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease in which inflammation destroys the protective insulation around nerves (demyelination) and the nerves themselves. It is used in adults and children over 13 years of age with a form of MS called relapsing-remitting, in which patients have episodes of symptoms (relapses) followed by periods of recovery (remissions). Dimethyl fumarate contains the active substance dimethyl fumarate. In multiple sclerosis, the immune system (the body's natural defense system) malfunctions and attacks parts of the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves of the eyes), causing inflammation that damages the nerves and their surrounding insulation.
