Each capsule of Dabigatran etexilate capsules (Pradaxa) contains dabigatran etexilate mesylate as the active ingredient. Dabigatran etexilate reversibly binds to the active site on the thrombin molecule, preventing thrombin-mediated activation of coagulation factors. In addition, dabigatran etexilate inactivates thrombin even though it is bound to fibrin; it reduces thrombin-mediated inhibition of fibrinolysis and therefore may enhance fibrinolysis. Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism is very important in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Dabigatran etexilate capsules can effectively inhibit thrombin, thereby preventing the occurrence of thrombosis and embolic events.
