What disease does Teriflunomide treat?
Teriflunomide (Teriflunomide) is a once-daily oral immunomodulator indicated for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. Teriflunomide reversibly inhibits dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, a mitochondrial enzyme necessary for de novo pyrimidine synthesis. Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase inhibition limits the pyrimidine pool available for T and B cell proliferation, thereby reducing the number of activated T and B cells that cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the central nervous system. The patient's immune response was preserved during teriflunomide treatment.
