Introduction: Sabril, commonly known as Vigabatrin, is an over-the-counter drug used to treat specific symptoms of epilepsy. It mainly works by irreversibly inhibiting GABA transaminase, and has a significant effect on epilepsy symptoms such as infantile spasms and Landau-Kleffner syndrome. There are many versions of Vigabatrin on the market, mainly including the French Sanofi version, the German version, the Hong Kong version, the Taiwan version, the imported version and the local version. These versions may have differences in raw materials, production processes and packaging, but the core ingredients and therapeutic effects remain the same.

Introduction to the Vigabatrin version

The French Sanofi version: As the original drug, the French Sanofi version is known for its high quality and stable efficacy. Common specifications include 500mg*100 tablets. The price is relatively high, but the quality is guaranteed.

German version: The German version of Vigabatrin is also sourced from the raw materials of Sanofi in France, but the post-processing and packaging are completed in Germany. Available in various specifications, such as 500mg 50 tablets and 500mg 100 tablets, the prices vary according to specifications and purchasing channels.

Hong Kong version, Taiwan version, imported native version: The packaging of these versions is mostly in English and is produced by the same production line. The raw materials and processes are the same, and they only differ in the sales area and packaging details. The price is relatively affordable and is the choice of many patients.

Local version: Mainly sold in Türkiye, tableted and packaged locally in Türkiye. Although the price is the lowest, the tablets may be rough, and whether the efficacy will be affected requires further research.

Vigabatrin (Sabril) Precautions

Consult a doctor before use: The prescription of Vigabatrin is limited to epilepsy, psychiatry or child neurologists. Patients should use it under the guidance of a doctor to ensure the safety of the drug.

Dose adjustment: The starting dose should be determined according to the patient's weight and condition, and gradually increased to the effective dose. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 3 grams and should be adjusted under medical supervision.

Adverse reaction monitoring: Adverse reactions such as drowsiness, fatigue, weight gain, and dizziness may occur after taking Vigabatrin. Some patients may also experience visual disturbances, such as reduced visual field or loss of vision. This side effect usually occurs months to years after taking the drug and may not recover after stopping the drug. Therefore, patients should have regular vision exams and seek immediate medical attention if any vision problems occur.

Use with caution in special groups: The elderly, patients with impaired renal function and children under 6 years old should use Vigabatrin with caution as it may increase the risk of adverse reactions.

Avoid combination with other drugs: Vigabatrin should not be combined with other retinal toxic drugs to avoid aggravating visual damage.

Be careful when discontinuing the medication: If there is no significant improvement in epilepsy control, the medication should be gradually discontinued under the guidance of a doctor to avoid sudden discontinuation of the medication, which may lead to a rebound in the condition.
