What kind of medicine is vigabatrin? Vigabatrin, Sabrilex, is a synthetic derivative of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Vigabatrin increases the concentration of GABA in the brain by irreversibly inhibiting GABA aminotransferase. Vigabatrin is used as adjunctive therapy in patients who are refractory to other antiepileptic drugs, especially those with partial seizures (mainly used to control complex partial seizures). Sabrilex can worsen absence seizures or myoclonic seizures. Sabrilex can be used in infants with West syndrome (infantile spasms), which is generally unresponsive to conventional antiepileptic drugs. Vigabatrin, Sabrilex, is an oral drug that is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and can reach its peak blood level 2 hours after taking it. The maximum daily dose of Sabrilex for adults is 2-3g. It is appropriate to start taking it at 1g a day. Then, depending on the response after taking the medication, if the response is good, it can be increased by 0.5g every week, and finally reaches a dose of 2-3g per day. The recommended dosage of Sabrilex for children is 40 mg/kg/day. Continuous medication should be judged based on the patient's weight. The recommended dosage for children weighing 10-15kg is 0.5-1g/day; the recommended dosage for 15-30kg is 1-1.5g/day; the recommended dosage for 30-50kg is 1.5-3g/day; >50kg 2-3g/day. 

Common side effects of vigabatrin include fatigue, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, confusion, and depression, which are usually controllable, but patients need to be aware that vigabatrin can cause permanent vision loss in infants, children, and adults, including progressive and permanent bilateral concentric visual field constriction in >30% of patients, ranging in severity from mild to severe, including tunnel vision to fixed vision within 10 degrees, and can lead to disability. Generally, patients with uncontrolled epilepsy are not allowed to drive or operate potentially dangerous machinery. Given reports of drowsiness during clinical use of vigabatrin, patients should be warned before initiating treatment.
