Introduction: The coronavirus can spread to the heart and brain within days of infection, and can also cause persistent symptoms in “long COVID” patients.
A new study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can spread to the heart and brain within days of infection and survive in these organs for months.

The study authors said the virus can spread to nearly every organ system in the body, which could lead to persistent symptoms in "long COVID" patients. The study is considered one of the most comprehensive reviews of how viruses replicate in human cells and persist in the body. The research is under review and will be published in the journal Nature.

For a long time, researchers have wondered why "long COVID" affects so many organ systems. The paper provides some clues that may help explain why even patients with mild or asymptomatic acute illness develop "long COVID."
NIH researchers sampled and analyzed the bodies of 44 patients who died after contracting the coronavirus during the first year of the pandemic. They found that viral particles persisted in multiple parts of the body, including the heart and brain, up to 230 days after symptoms began. They said this could indicate infection with defective viral particles, which is also seen in persistent infections in people with measles.
Researchers are not sure whether symptoms of early-onset heart failure or early-onset dementia are seen in survivors of coronavirus infection, but preventive public health measures are needed to slow the spread of the virus.
Bloomberg News said that unlike other COVID-19 autopsy studies, the NIH team has a more comprehensive autopsy tissue collection process, usually within a day of the patient's death. The researchers also used a variety of methods to preserve tissue to understand virus levels. They were able to culture viruses collected from tissues such as the heart, lungs, small intestine and adrenal glands.
"Our results show that although the greatest burden of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is in the respiratory tract and lungs, the virus can spread early in infection and infect cells throughout the body, including widespread infection throughout the brain," the study's authors said.
