Cystic fibrosis and drug introduction

Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive multisystem progressive disease that causes thickening and sticky mucus in various organs. The disease primarily affects a patient's upper and lower respiratory tracts, causing long-term lung infection and limiting the ability to breathe over time.

Dornase alfa (Pulmozyme) is a mucus-thinning inhaled medication used to manage and treat cystic fibrosis. It has been shown to reduce forced vital capacity (FVC) in selected patients with respiratory infections by more than 40% predicted.

Pulmozyme

1. Pulmozyme can only be used with a nebulizer and compressor to deliver a dose of Pulmozyme. The nebulizer turns Pulmozyme liquid medication into a fine mist that patients can breathe into through a mouthpiece. The compressor provides power to the atomizer and makes the atomizer work.

2. Before taking the medicine, you should prepare the necessary items, such as 1 Pulmozyme ampoule, atomizer, long connecting tube, atomizer cup and cap, etc.

3. First, you need to prepare the jet atomizer and compressor, and clean your hands to prevent infection.

4. To test the compressor, you need to place all parts of the sprayer on a clean, flat surface. Test by opening the compression with the same hand, placing your hand in front of the air port and feeling the air flow.

5. Take out 1 ampoule from the refrigerator, put the remaining ampoules into a foil bag, put it back in the refrigerator, and check its shelf life and whether the ampoule is leaking. If there is any abnormality, avoid use.

6. A long connecting pipe needs to be connected to the air output port on the compressor.

7. Unscrew or loosen the cap from the nebulizer cup, then open the ampoule, pour enough medicine into the nebulizer cup, and then connect the plastic t to the nebulizer cap (if you are using a side-flow nebulizer, please connect the mouthpiece to the top of the nebulizer. If you are using a PARI baby nebulizer, you need to connect the elbow and mask to the nebulizer outlet).

8. Push up hard and connect the open end of the long connecting tube to the port at the bottom of the atomizer cup. Turn on the compressor and check whether there is mist in the atomizer.

9. Breathe through the mouth, not through the nose. The complete treatment usually takes 10-15 minutes.

It is important that patients inhale the full dose of Pulmozyme. If you find a leak or feel moisture in the atomizer during treatment, you should turn off the compressor in time and check to ensure that the atomizer cap is properly sealed before continuing treatment.
