It is an effective non-purine selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase (XO). By selectively inhibiting xanthine oxidase, it can achieve the therapeutic effect of reducing serum uric acid. So, how much is the dosage of febuxostat?

Recommended dose of febuxostat: 40 mg or 80 mg once daily. The recommended starting dose of febuxostat is 40 mg once daily. Febuxostat 80 mg is recommended for patients who do not achieve serum uric acid (sUA) less than 6 mg/dL 2 weeks after 40 mg. It can be given without food or with antacids.

No dose adjustment is required when administering febuxostat to patients with mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment.

Febuxostat’s mechanism of action:

Before understanding how febuxostat lowers uric acid, we need to understand how uric acid in the body increases. Uric acid is a product of purine metabolism in the body and is mainly excreted in the urine. If for some reason, the production of uric acid increases and the excretion of uric acid decreases, uric acid will accumulate in the body.

The metabolism of purine into uric acid requires the participation of xanthine oxidase. Febuxostat is a new type of xanthine oxidase (XO) selective inhibitor that specifically hooks xanthine oxidase so that it cannot play a role in the process of metabolizing purine into uric acid, solving the root cause of the problem of high uric acid.

Febuxostat is indicated for patients with hyperuricemic gout. Generally speaking, there are three main types of high uric acid in gout patients: excessive uric acid production, poor uric acid excretion, and mixed type. Since febuxostat mainly reduces serum uric acid concentration by inhibiting uric acid synthesis, it is more suitable for patients with excessive uric acid production. Here, it is recommended that gout patients take a 24-hour urine test for uric acid to determine the type of high uric acid before deciding which medicine to take.

In fact, it outperforms other traditional gout drugs such as allopurinol and benzbromarone.
