As a new type of urate-lowering drug, it has been increasingly recognized and accepted by people. The advantages of febuxostat include small side effects, fast onset of effect, and stable urate-lowering levels. Although side effects are small, it does not mean that there are no side effects. Therefore, patients need to pay attention to the following precautions when taking febuxostat!

1. As a drug that lowers uric acid, gout (arthritis) caused by a sharp drop in uric acid may occur in the early stages of treatment.

  2. Liver and kidney function need to be monitored regularly to observe whether there is damage to liver, kidney and thyroid function. If liver and kidney function damage occurs, the drug needs to be stopped immediately; patients with severe liver and kidney disease should use with caution.

3. Observe whether it causes rashes or allergies.

4. Febuxostat will increase the risk of cardiovascular events. Patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases should be cautious when using febuxostat.

5. When taking febuxostat, uric acid levels should be monitored regularly. If the uric acid level drops significantly, the dose of febuxostat can be gradually reduced, but this needs to be done under the guidance of a doctor.

6. After starting treatment with febuxostat for gout attacks, an increase in gout attacks may be observed. This is caused by changing serum uric acid levels that reduce the activity of deposited urate. To prevent gout attacks while taking febuxostat, concomitant administration of an NSAID or colchicine is recommended.

7. In the study on liver enzyme increase, it was observed that the aminotransferase level was higher than 3 times the upper limit of normal (the patients taking this product and allopurinol increased respectively, AST: 2%, 2%, ALT: 3%, 2%). No dose-response relationship was found for the increase in transaminases. Liver function laboratory analysis recommends the use of this product for treatment in February and April, and periodic treatment thereafter.

In addition, the most common adverse reaction during treatment is abnormal liver function. If you find abnormalities during examination, you should consult your doctor whether you need to adjust the medication plan. Others such as dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, etc. occur less frequently (<1%).
