How to taketeriparatide
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or inserts. Take medication exactly as directed.
Teriparatide is given by subcutaneous injection. Your healthcare provider may teach you how to give yourself the injection correctly.
Usually taken once daily at the same time.
Carefully read and follow any directions for use that come with your medicine. If you have any questions about the directions for use of your medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Inject when the medication is ready. If the medicine looks cloudy, has changed color, or has particles, do not use it and ask your pharmacist for new medicine.
The health care provider will tell you where on the body the injection will be given. The injection site needs to be changed for each injection, and do not inject twice in a row at the same site.
Only use the injection pen that comes with teriparatide. Do not transfer this medication into a syringe or other injection device or overdose may occur.
Teriparatide injections can make you feel dizzy or lightheaded. Be sure to give the injection at a time and place where you can sit or lie down for a short period of time.
Each prefilled pen contains enough teriparatide for 28 separate injections. Throw away the pen after 28 injections, even if there is still medicine in it.
Teriparatide may be just one part of a complete treatment plan that also includes diet, exercise, taking vitamin or mineral supplements, and changing certain behaviors. Strictly follow your doctor's instructions.
Store the pen in the refrigerator when not in use. Take the pen out of the refrigerator only when using it. After use, remove the needle, secure the cap and return it to the refrigerator.
Use needles and syringes only once and place them in a puncture-proof "sharps" container. Please follow state or local laws on how to dispose of this container. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Do not freeze this medication. If the medication is frozen, throw it away.
Your doctor will tell you how long treatment will take. Teriparatide is sometimes only used for 2 years.
