Analysis on whether Vigabatrin (Ocoda) can be stopped at will after taking it
Vigabatrin is an anti-epileptic drug mainly used to treat refractory partial epilepsy and infantile spasms. Its mechanism of action is to increase the level of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the brain by irreversibly inhibiting GABA-aminase, thereby controlling epileptic seizures. Due to its pharmacological properties, the effect of Vigabatrin lasts after accumulation in the body. Care must be taken when discontinuing the drug, otherwise aggravation of epileptic seizures or rebound seizures may occur.
Vibatrin should not be stopped suddenly at will. If patients stop taking the medication on their own, especially for long-term users, it may cause worsening of epilepsy, increased frequency of seizures, and even severe epilepsy (status epilepticus). Therefore, doctors often recommend tapering, slowly lowering the dose to allow the nervous system to gradually adapt to drug withdrawal, thereby reducing the risk of relapse.

The medication reduction plan needs to be formulated based on the patient’s age, medication dosage, medication time, and disease control. Adult patients typically taper every 1–2 weeks, while children or infants may require longer tapering cycles. During the reduction period, the number of epileptic seizures, changes in neurological function and vision should be closely observed. If abnormalities occur, the doctor should be contacted in time to adjust the plan. Some patients may need to gradually discontinue the drug with the assistance of other anti-epileptic drugs to maintain efficacy.
During the withdrawal process, patients and family members should regularly record the frequency, type and triggering factors of attacks and maintain communication with their doctors. At the same time, because Vigabatrin may cause retinal damage, patients taking long-term medication need to undergo regular retinal function tests during and after discontinuation of medication. Retinal function tests are required. In short, discontinuation of Vigabatrin must be done under the guidance of a doctor, and never be discontinued on your own to ensure safety and continuity of treatment.
