The potential side effects of perampanel tablets are high
Perampanel tablets, as a selective, non-competitiveAMPA glutamate receptor antagonist, are commonly used drugs in the treatment of epilepsy and have significant efficacy. However, a variety of adverse reactions may occur during use, and some patients need to be closely monitored.
Among the common adverse reactions, dizziness, drowsiness, irritability and ataxia are more prominent. These side effects are more pronounced during the initial treatment or dose adjustment period, and the risk is higher when combined with other CNS depressant drugs. Dizziness and drowsiness can affect patients' daily activities, such as driving and operating machinery.
Psychiatric symptoms are also an adverse effect of concern. Some patients experience aggressive behavior, anxiety, hostility, mood swings, and even anger attacks, hallucinations, or delusions. This type of situation is more common in teenagers or patients with a history of mental illness, so changes in mental status should be closely observed in the early stages of medication.
In addition, perampanel may cause balance disorders, abnormal speech, blurred vision, fatigue, nausea, decreased appetite, etc. Some patients may have changes in weight and liver function indicators may also increase. Long-term treatment requires regular review of liver enzyme levels.
Serious but rare adverse events are suicidal ideation and behavior. FDA warns that epilepsy patients taking perampanel should pay close attention to the risk of suicide, especially 3 months before and after treatment. Patients and family members should report changes in mood or behavior at any time.
However, the adverse effects of perampanel are manageable and reversible in most patients. By gradually adding medication, adjusting the combination regimen, or reducing the dose and discontinuing medication, most side effects can be alleviated or disappeared. Doctors should fully assess individual risk factors before prescribing, especially children, the elderly and those taking combined medications to reduce the chance of side effects.
