Guanfacine belongs to several levels of psychotropic drugs

Guanfacine is an α-2A adrenergic receptor agonist mainly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and hypertension. Although guanfacine has certain clinical therapeutic effects, it is not a psychotropic drug.

Psychotropic substances generally refer to drugs that have abuse potential and may cause dependence, addiction, or abuse. Internationally, drug regulatory agencies in various countries usually classify drugs based on their potential for abuse, addiction, and harm to social health. In the United States, for example, drugs are classified into the "controlled substance" category, based on abuse potential, addictiveness, and medical use. Drugs are classified into Schedule I to Schedule V, with Schedule I drugs being considered to have the greatest potential for abuse and having little medical use, and Schedule V drugs being the category with the least potential for abuse.

Unlike many common psychotropic drugs (such as amphetamines, amphetamines, etc.), guanfacine does not have the potential for abuse or addiction. Its main mechanism of action is through selective stimulation of α-2A adrenergic receptors, thereby regulating nerve conduction in the brain and improving attention, impulse control and other problems in ADHD patients. The pharmacological effects of guanfacine are completely different from stimulant drugs such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamines. These stimulant drugs increase brain activity by promoting the release of neurotransmitters, while guanfacine mainly achieves sedative and impulse control effects by increasing the reabsorption of neurotransmitters. Therefore, guanfacine's mode of action is different from that of addictive drugs.

Because guanfacine has no abuse potential and no addictive properties, it is not a psychotropic drug in the traditional sense. It is available as a prescription drug under a doctor's supervision, but it is not classified as a drug requiring special supervision.
