Recommended usage, dosage and medication precautions of Erlotinib

Erlotinib is an oral targeted anti-cancer drug, mainly used to treat non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. It inhibits the activity of EGFR tyrosine kinase and blocks tumor cell signal transduction, thereby inhibiting the growth and spread of tumor cells. In order to achieve the best therapeutic effect, patients should use this medicine correctly under the guidance of a doctor and follow the recommended usage and dosage.

Normally, the recommended dose of erlotinib is 150mg once a day for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer; if used in combination with gemcitabine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, the recommended dose is 100mg once a day. Medications should be taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hours before meals or 2 hours after meals to ensure absorption. Erlotinib is administered in tablet form and should be swallowed whole and should not be broken, chewed, or dissolved in liquids.

During medication, patients should be careful to avoid concurrent use with potent CYP3A4enzyme inducers (such as rifampicin, phenytoin) or inhibitors (such as ketoconazole), so as not to affect drug concentration and efficacy. It is not recommended to smoke while taking the drug because smoking will reduce the concentration of erlotinib in the body, thus weakening the therapeutic effect. In addition, some gastric acid-suppressing drugs (such as omeprazole) may also interfere with the absorption of erlotinib. The medication time should be adjusted or the drug should be changed under the guidance of a doctor.

Common adverse reactions include rash, diarrhea, loss of appetite and fatigue. Some patients may also develop interstitial lung disease, liver function abnormalities or corneal lesions. Liver function, lung condition, and skin reactions should therefore be monitored regularly during treatment.
