What is the dosage of Brivaracetam? What dosing and timing do patients need to follow when using this medication?
Brivaracetam is a new anti-epileptic drug mainly used to treat partial epileptic seizures in adults and children aged 4 years and above. Its mechanism of action is to regulate neuronal signal transmission by binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), thereby reducing the frequency of epileptic seizures. Compared with traditional antiepileptic drugs, brivaracetam has higher affinity and better tolerability, so it is widely used clinically.
The recommended dose is oral twice daily. Adults and adolescents 16 years of age and older usually start at 50 mg twice daily (total dose 100 mg/day), which can be adjusted to 100-200mg twice a day (i.e. total dose 200-400mg/day) based on the patient's tolerance and efficacy. Dosage in children is adjusted based on body weight, usually starting at 1 mg/kg twice daily and up to 5 mg/kg twice daily. Brivaracetam can be taken with or without food and should be taken at a fixed time every day to maintain stable blood concentrations.
Patients should be careful to avoid sudden discontinuation of the drug while taking brivaracetam, as sudden discontinuation may lead to worsening of seizures. If the dose needs to be adjusted or discontinued, the dose must be gradually reduced under the guidance of a doctor. In addition, this drug has fewer drug interactions, but dosage adjustments may be required when used with potent enzyme inducers such as rifampicin, so patients should inform their doctor in advance when taking other drugs.
Common adverse reactions include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and mood changes. Some patients may develop depression or anxiety, so mental health should be paid close attention to during treatment. Concentration and reaction speed may be affected while taking the drug, so patients should avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in high-risk activities until their tolerance to the drug is confirmed. Regular review and communication with the doctor can help optimize the treatment plan and ensure the best effect.
