Is Ixazomib/Enleri a chemotherapy drug or a targeted drug? What is its mechanism of action
Ixazomib is an oral proteasome inhibitor widely used to treat multiple myeloma (MM). Although it shares the properties of some chemotherapy drugs, its mechanism of action makes it closer to a targeted drug. Unlike traditional chemotherapy drugs, ixazomib can precisely intervene on tumor cells through specific targets, thereby inhibiting tumor growth.
The mechanism of action of ixazomib involves inhibition of the proteasome. Proteasomes are complex structures within cells responsible for breaking down unwanted or damaged proteins and are essential for maintaining normal cell function. In cancer cells, proteasomes not only help break down outdated proteins, but are also involved in regulating key processes such as cell cycle and apoptosis. By selectively inhibiting the activity of the proteasome, ixazomib interferes with the clearance function of damaged proteins by tumor cells, causing these cells to accumulate bad proteins and ultimately trigger cell death.
Unlike traditional chemotherapy drugs that directly interfere withDNA or cell division, ixazomib mainly controls the development of cancer by changing the protein metabolism process so that tumor cells cannot maintain their normal functions. This mechanism of action is selective and mainly affects cancer cells, but has less impact on normal healthy cells, thus reducing side effects.
Ixazomib has shown significant efficacy in the treatment of multiple myeloma. It is often used in combination with other drugs, such as lenalidomide and dexamethasone, to inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells. Studies have shown that when ixazomib is used in combination with these drugs, it can not only prolong the patient's survival, but also effectively control the disease and improve the patient's quality of life.
