Can Opicapone effectively cure Parkinson's disease?
Opicapone is a new, long-acting catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, mainly used for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients as an auxiliary treatment with Levodopa/Carbidopa to help reduce the "off" phenomenon (OFF phenomenon), that is, the weakening of the drug's effect after taking the drug leads to aggravation of motor symptoms. Although Opicapone can significantly improve the motor symptoms and quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease, it does not cure Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease mainly caused by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Levodopa is currently the most effective therapeutic drug, but long-term use may cause fluctuations in drug efficacy, such as"off period" (OFF phenomenon) and dyskinesia (involuntary movements). As a COMT inhibitor, Opicapone reduces the degradation of levodopa in the body by inhibiting the activity of peripheral COMT enzymes, thereby extending the half-life of levodopa, improving its utilization in the brain, and making its effect more stable. Clinical studies have shown that Opicapone can significantly reduce the "off period" and increase the "on period" (ON time) in patients with Parkinson's disease, thereby improving motor function. But it needs to be clear that the fundamental cause of Parkinson's disease is the continued loss of dopamine neurons. There is currently no treatment that can stop or reverse this process, so Opicapone cannot cure Parkinson's disease.
In addition, the therapeutic effect of Opicapone varies from person to person, and some patients may experience drug-related adverse reactions, such as movement disorders (such as dyskinesia), gastrointestinal discomfort (such as nausea, diarrhea), insomnia, headache, etc. Therefore, patients need to adjust the dosage under the guidance of a doctor when using Opicapone, and closely monitor the efficacy and side effects of the drug.
