Whether cabergoline can completely cure prolactinemia and analysis of its efficacy
Cabergoline (Cabergoline) is the most commonly used dopamine receptor agonist with the most clear efficacy in treating hyperprolactinemia. It inhibits pituitary prolactin adenoma or functional prolactin secretion, thereby reducing serum prolactin levels and improving symptoms such as menstrual disorders, infertility, and lactation. Most patients see noticeable results within weeks to months of treatment, including a return to normal prolactin levels, a return to regular menstrual cycles, and improved gonadal function. Therefore, cabergoline is clinically regarded as a first-line treatment for hyperprolactinemia, with stable efficacy and good tolerance.
However,"whether it can be completely cured" depends on the cause of the elevated prolactin. If the patient only has functional hyperprolactinemia or elevated prolactin caused by reversible factors such as drugs and stress, some patients can achieve lasting relief after treatment with cabergoline and discontinuation of the triggering drugs, and even prolactin levels remain normal after the drug is completely discontinued. However, for patients with pituitary microadenomas, although cabergoline can normalize prolactin and shrink adenomas in more than 80% of patients, the adenomas themselves will not be completely "cured", and a certain proportion may still relapse after stopping the drug.

In patients with pituitary macroadenoma, cabergoline still has a good therapeutic effect, but the recurrence rate is higher after complete discontinuation of the drug. Therefore, these patients often require maintenance at lower doses for long periods or even years to keep prolactin stable and prevent tumor growth again. For a small number of patients who are insensitive or resistant to cabergoline, doctors may adjust the dose or switch to other treatment options (such as surgery or another class of drugs), but this is rare. Judging from the overall data, cabergoline brings long-term benefits to most patients, but the probability of "complete cure" is closely related to the cause of the disease.
In general, cabergoline is not a "radical" drug in the strict sense, but an efficient and long-term treatment for disease control. Many patients can achieve long-term remission after standard treatment, and some can even successfully discontinue medication without recurrence. However, for patients with pituitary adenoma, regular monitoring of prolactin levels and pituitary imaging is usually required. Patients should strictly follow the doctor's instructions for follow-up and avoid stopping the medication on their own; if recurrence occurs, the dosage can be adjusted to continue effective control. Correct understanding of drug effects and consistent treatment are the keys to obtaining the best curative effect.
