What is doxorubicin? Introduction to antitumor drug classification and clinical application
Doxorubicin (Doxorubicin) is a broad-spectrum anti-tumor drug that belongs to the anthracycline class of antibiotics. It is a chemically modified natural compound produced by Streptomyces and has strong cytotoxicity and anti-cancer activity. Doxorubicin inhibits the proliferation of tumor cells and induces apoptosis by interfering with the DNA replication and transcription processes of cancer cells. It is widely used in the treatment of various malignant tumors.
In the classification of anti-tumor drugs, doxorubicin belongs to the anthracycline class of drugs and is usually classified into the category of cytotoxic drugs. Its main mechanism of action includes inserting DNA double strands, inhibiting topoisomerase II activity and generating free radicals, thereby destroying the genetic material of cancer cells. Compared with other anthracyclines such as epirubicin (Epirubicin), doxorubicin has stronger anti-cancer efficacy, but the side effects are relatively obvious.

Clinically, doxorubicin is widely used in the treatment of a variety of solid tumors and hematological malignancies. For example, it is commonly used in chemotherapy regimens for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, leukemia and lymphoma, among others. Depending on the type of cancer, doxorubicin can be used alone or in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to improve efficacy and reduce the occurrence of drug resistance.
It should be noted that side effects such as bone marrow suppression, hair loss, nausea and vomiting, and cardiotoxicity may occur during the use of doxorubicin. In order to ensure the safety of medication, clinical dosage calculation is usually based on the patient's body surface area (BSA), combined with cardiac function assessment, blood routine, and liver and kidney function monitoring. Rational use of doxorubicin can not only improve the therapeutic effect, but also minimize the risk of adverse reactions.
