Introduction: Vigabatrin is an anticonvulsant drug that increases the levels of a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Some seizures are caused by low levels of GABA, and when Vigabatrin increases GABA it reduces the likelihood of seizures. Vigabatrin is used alone or with other drugs for the treatment of refractory complex partial epilepsy in adults and children over 2 years of age and infantile spasms in children, in patients who have been treated with other drugs without success.

Adverse reactions of Vigabatrin

In addition to permanent vision loss in adults, the most common adverse reactions in clinical trials include headache, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, convulsions, upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis, nystagmus, tremor, blurred vision, memory loss, weight gain, joint pain, coordination abnormalities, nausea and diarrhea, etc. Symptoms such as depression, irritability, anxiety and insomnia have also been reported, and some patients may also experience other adverse reactions not listed.

Treatment measures for adverse reactions of Vigabatrin

1. Headache and fatigue: It can be relieved by adjusting drug dosage, improving living habits, and ensuring adequate rest and sleep time. When necessary, the doctor may recommend the use of painkillers or other symptomatic treatments.

2. Eye problems: Because Vigabatrin may cause vision damage, patients using this drug need to undergo regular eye examinations. If vision problems occur, you should contact your doctor immediately for evaluation and treatment. In some cases, it may be necessary to stop using Vigabatrin or switch to another medication.

3. Nausea or diarrhea: Eat a light diet, avoid eating hard-to-digest, spicy and irritating foods, and drink plenty of water to replenish fluids.

4. Other adverse reactions: For other possible adverse reactions, such as nausea, vomiting, rash, etc., the doctor will give corresponding treatment suggestions based on the patient's specific situation, which may include adjusting the drug dosage, using other drugs to control symptoms, or changing the treatment plan when necessary.

5. Discontinuation of medication: If adverse reactions are severe or persistent, the doctor may recommend discontinuing the medication and looking for other alternative treatment options.
