Natamycin eye drops are only for local use on the eyes and have significant efficacy. Common adverse reactions include allergic reactions, vision changes, eye pain, eye edema, etc., which can be relieved by general treatment, drug treatment, etc. under the guidance of a doctor.

The correct way to use natamycin eye drops

1.:

For local use only, not suitable for injection. Failure to improve keratitis after 7-10 days of dosing suggests that the infection may be caused by a microorganism that is not susceptible to natamycin.

2. Recommended dosage:

Shake well before use. The preferred dose for fungal keratitis is one drop of natamycin 5% eye drop administered into the conjunctival sac every hour or every two hours. After the first 3 to 4 days, the frequency of application can usually be reduced to one drop 6 to 8 times per day. Treatment should usually continue for 14 to 21 days or until active fungal keratitis resolves.

In many cases, tapering the dose at 4 to 7 day intervals may help ensure that the replicating organisms are eliminated. For fungal blepharitis and conjunctivitis, less frequent initial dosing (4 to 6 times daily) may be sufficient.

Store and Available

Is a 15ml refill packaged in a 15ml amber glass bottle with a black phenolic resin closure. The tunnel glass dropper with red plastic seal and the black rubber bulb are individually packaged in clear plastic blister with Tyvek lining.

It is recommended to store at 2-24 degrees Celsius (36-75 degrees Fahrenheit) to avoid freezing, exposure to sunlight and overheating.

Therapeutic advantages

1. Strong antifungal effect:

Fungal keratitis is a fungal infection of the eye and one of the main causes of blindness in one eye. Natamycin has long been considered the mainstay drug for the treatment of fungal keratitis and is the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). It is commercially available as topical 5% natamycin eye drops.

2. High safety:

Treatment of ocular fungal infections requires weeks to months to recover, and commercially available antifungal suspensions have poor retention times, limited bioavailability (<5%) and high dosing frequency as well as mild irritation and discomfort. Despite these challenges, natamycin eye drops remain the drug of choice for the treatment of fungal keratitis because it has fewer side effects and lower ocular toxicity and is more effective against Fusarium species than other antifungal agents.

3. Good treatment:

Several new treatments for topical delivery of natamycin have been reported to overcome challenges posed by conventional dosage forms and improve ocular bioavailability, thereby effectively controlling fungal keratitis. Current advances in delivery systems use methods designed to improve corneal residence time, bioavailability, and antifungal efficacy, thereby reducing the dose and frequency of dosing of natamycin eye drops.

Side effects

During treatment, natamycin eye drops can cause adverse reactions such as allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, vision changes, eye irritation, chest pain, corneal opacity, eye edema, eye congestion, eye pain, eye discomfort, foreign body sensation, abnormal sensation and tearing.

How to deal with side effects

1. Allergic reaction: If the patient develops allergic symptoms after using natamycin eye drops, the use should be suspended in time. Antihistamines such as loratadine, cetirizine, and diphenhydramine can be used under the guidance of a doctor to relieve symptoms.

2. Foreign body sensation: It is recommended that patients keep their eyes clean during treatment. Under the guidance of a doctor, you can use some eye drops or ointments to relieve eye discomfort symptoms and avoid rubbing your eyes with your hands.

3. Changes in vision: During the use of Natamycin Eye Drops, excessive use of the eyes, such as looking at mobile phones or computers for long periods of time, should be avoided to reduce eye irritation.

4. Eye pain: If the eye pain is severe, it is recommended that the patient go to the hospital in time and change to other drug treatments under the doctor's evaluation.

Clinical efficacy analysis

Objective: To explore the efficacy of natamycin eye drops in the treatment of fluconazole-resistant fungal keratitis.

Methods: Forty-four eyes of 44 patients with fluconazole-resistant fungal keratitis were treated with natamycin eye drops and 5% iodine tincture to cauterize the ulcer surface, or the ulcer surface (patients with severe corneal ulcers) were resected and covered with conjunctival flaps and treated with 5% natamycin eye drops.

Results: 37 cases were cured, 5 cases improved, 2 cases were ineffective, and 42 cases were totally effective.

Conclusion: Natamycin eye drops are an effective drug in the treatment of fungal keratitis.

Comparison of the efficacy of natamycin eye drops and voriconazole eye drops

Objective: To compare the efficacy of natamycin eye drops and voriconazole eye drops in the treatment of fungal keratitis.

Methods: 86 patients with fungal keratitis admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanyang Medical College from January 2016 to January 2020 were selected as the research subjects and divided into a control group and a research group according to the random number table method, with 43 cases in each group. The control group received voriconazole eye drops, and the research group received natamycin eye drops. The eye severity score, vision recovery, and clinical effects of the two groups after 1 month of treatment were compared.

Results: After 1 month of treatment, the treatment effectiveness rate of the research group (95.35%) was higher than that of the control group (79.07%). Compared with the control group, there was a significant difference in the vision correction rate 1 month after treatment. Before treatment, the eye severity scores of the two groups were compared. After 1 month of treatment, the eye symptoms of the two groups of patients were significantly reduced, but the observation group was significantly lower than the control group.

Conclusion: Compared with voriconazole eye drops, giving natamycin eye drops to patients with fungal keratitis is more conducive to improving the patient's clinical effect, improving the patient's vision correction rate, and reducing the patient's eye severity score.

Summary

Natamycin eye drops have obvious effects in treating ocular fungal diseases. It is recommended that patients pay attention to physical exercise, strengthen their physical fitness, develop good hygiene habits during treatment, actively cooperate with doctors in treatment, and follow the doctor's instructions for medication.
