How many days will it take for natamycin eye drops to be effective?

Natamycin eye drops are a broad-spectrum antifungal drug that has a strong inhibitory effect on deep-seated fungi such as Aspergillus, Blastomyces and Candida. Natamycin eye drops usually improve after 1 day of use. The specific time of effectiveness is related to the actual condition of the patient. Treatment generally lasts for 14-21 days, or until the active fungal keratitis subsides. If the eye symptoms do not improve significantly after using it for about 10 days, you should stop using it immediately and conduct an examination to determine alternative antifungal drugs.

Natamycin eye drops dosage and dosage

Natamycin eye drops should be shaken thoroughly before use. The starting dose for the treatment of fungal keratitis is 1 drop each time, once every 1-2 hours, and instilled into the conjunctival sac. After 3-4 days, change to 1 drop each time, 6-8 times a day. The initial dose for the treatment of fungal blepharitis and conjunctivitis can be smaller, one drop each time, 4-6 times a day. In most cases, gradual reduction of the drug dose every 4-7 days is necessary to ensure elimination of pathogen replication.

The therapeutic effect of natamycin eye drops

Natamycin eye drops can also be combined with itraconazole to treat fungal keratitis. A trial showed that 31 cases of ocular fungal keratitis were treated with 5% natamycin eye drops. The frequency of medication was adjusted according to the condition, and 200 mg of itraconazole was taken orally once a day to observe the patient's efficacy.

The test results showed that after 25-45 days of treatment, 26 cases were cured; 2 cases improved; 3 cases had no significant improvement in symptoms, of which 2 underwent conjunctival flap covering and 1 underwent corneal transplantation. Conclusion: Natamycin eye drops combined with itraconazole are effective in treating fungal keratitis.

Another trial method used 5% natamycin eye drops in 28 patients with fungal keratitis. For mild and moderate corneal lesions, the eye drops were dropped once per hour, and then changed to once per day after 3-4 days. For severe cases, the eye drops were dropped once every 0.5 hours, and then once per hour after 3-4 days. After stabilization, the drops were changed to 7 times a day, with 1 drop each time. Results Among the 28 cases: 19 cases (67.86%) were cured, 7 cases (25.00%) improved, 2 cases (7.14%) were ineffective, and 26 cases (92.86%) were overall effective. Conclusion Natamycin is an effective drug in the treatment of fungal keratitis.
