Fungal keratitis is an infectious disease that seriously threatens vision. If not treated in time, it can lead to blindness. According to reports, common pathogenic fungi in my country are Fusarium, Aspergillus, Candida and yeast. It is currently the only ophthalmic antifungal preparation approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has become the first-line drug for the treatment of fungal keratitis. So, what are the functions and efficacy of natamycin eye drops?

Natamycin eye drops

Natamycin Eye Drops, as a natural antifungal compound produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces, relies on its lactone ring structure to combine with the ergosterol and other sterol groups of the fungus to block the biosynthesis of ergosterol, thereby distorting the cell membrane, eventually leading to leakage and cell death. In addition, previous studies have shown that natamycin eye drops can be directly attached to the surface of ulcers, with high local concentration of the drug and long-lasting efficacy. In recent years, it has been widely used in the treatment of fungal keratitis and has good clinical efficacy.

Effects of natamycin eye drops

Research purpose: To compare the effects of natamycin eye drops and voriconazole eye drops in the treatment of fungal keratitis [1].

Research method: 86 patients with fungal keratitis admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanyang Medical College were selected as the research subjects and divided into a control group and a research group according to the random number table method, with 43 cases in each group. The control group received voriconazole eye drops, and the research group received natamycin eye drops. The clinical effects, visual recovery, eye severity scores, and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups after 1 month of treatment.

Research results: After 1 month of treatment, the treatment effectiveness of the research group (95.35%) was higher than that of the control group (79.07%), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). After 1 month of treatment, the vision correction rate of the research group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no statistically significant difference in the eye severity scores between the two groups (P>0.05); after 1 month of treatment, the eye severity scores in both groups decreased, and the study group was lower than the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P>0.05).

Research conclusion: Compared with voriconazole eye drops, giving natamycin eye drops to patients with fungal keratitis is more conducive to improving the patient's clinical effect, improving the patient's vision correction rate, and reducing the patient's eye severity score.
