Can clofazimine treat tuberculosis? Clofazimine can treat pulmonary tuberculosis. Clofazimine is another core second-line drug that can be used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis. However, it is not a drug in the conventional treatment plan. It is used to treat multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, or it can be used when the side effects of certain tuberculosis drugs are intolerable.

Levofloxacin-containing chemotherapy regimen is considered to have good clinical effects on patients with relapsed positive disease, but the treatment of drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis is still a clinical problem. Clofazimine has good inhibitory effects on tuberculosis bacteria both in vivo and in vitro. In recent years, studies have shown that it can improve the negative conversion rate of patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis, and it has almost no antagonism with other anti-tuberculosis drugs. It is expected to become a drug to improve the efficacy of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

A study selected 124 patients with drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis and randomly divided them into a control group and an observation group, with 62 cases in each group. The control group was given levofloxacin chemotherapy, and the observation group was treated with clofazimine on the basis of the same chemotherapy for 8 months. Compare the clinical efficacy of the two groups of patients after 8 months of treatment.

Results: After 8 months of treatment, the total clinical effective rates of the observation group and the control group were 96.77% and 79.03% respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). After 8 months of treatment, Th1 and Th1/Th2 in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group, while Th2 was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01).

In summary, levofloxacin-containing chemotherapy regimen combined with clofazimine can improve the clinical efficacy of drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis, improve the balance of Th1/Th2 and corresponding cytokines, down-regulate sTim3 to alleviate immune suppression, and up-regulate RBP-4 to improve immune function.
