What are the reactions and effects of taking cabergoline in men?
Cabergoline is a selective dopamineD2 receptor agonist. Although it was initially widely used to treat amenorrhea or lactation caused by abnormal prolactin secretion in women, namelyhyperprolactinemia (HPRL), it also has clear therapeutic value in the male population. Especially for problems such as male sexual dysfunction, infertility, loss of libido, and decline in sperm quality caused by hyperprolactinemia, cabergoline has become one of the first-line treatments.

In men, physiological levels of prolactin are usually low, but if prolactin is elevated due to pituitary tumors or abnormal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, it may interfere with testosterone synthesis, leading to a variety of sex hormone-related problems. Studies have found that sustained high levels of prolactin can inhibit the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), reduce testosterone levels, and affect testicular function and sperm production. Cabergoline effectively interrupts this pathological process by inhibiting the release of prolactin from the anterior pituitary gland and helps restore male sex hormone balance.
After taking cabergoline, common positive reactions in male patients include: restoration of sexual desire, improvement in semen quality, improvement in erectile function, and some patients are even able to successfully restore fertility after treatment. This makes the drug gradually gain wider attention in male endocrinology and infertility departments. In addition, for blurred vision or headache symptoms caused by prolactinoma, drugs can also bring significant relief by reducing the size of the tumor.
However, cabergoline may also cause side effects in some men. Common ones include mild nausea, dizziness, low blood pressure, and mood swings. Most of these reactions are related to rapid adjustment of the initial dose, so it is recommended to start with a low dose and gradually increase it. For men who take long-term high-dose medication, heart valve function should be monitored regularly, especially when symptoms such as palpitations and chest tightness occur, to eliminate the risk of drug-related valve changes.
