How to deal with side effects of sunitinib
Sunitinib is a multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is widely used in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). However, while the drug exerts anti-tumor effects, it is often accompanied by a series of side effects, which affects patients' medication compliance and quality of life. The management of side effects requires not only early identification but also individualized response strategies.
In actual treatment, patients often suffer from problems such as fatigue, stomatitis, hypertension, skin pigment changes, hypothyroidism, and hand-foot syndrome. For the treatment of these side effects, the International Society of Oncology recommends adopting the principle of "symptomatic control + dose adjustment". Taking hand-foot syndrome as an example, topical ointments can be used to relieve inflammation and reduce friction. If necessary, the medication can be suspended and restarted after the symptoms are relieved. Patients with thyroid dysfunction should undergo thyroid function monitoring and supplement levothyroxine if necessary.
The management of stomatitis focuses on prevention. It is recommended to use alcohol-free mouthwash, avoid spicy food and irritating mouthwash, and maintain oral hygiene. Hypertension can usually be controlled with conventional antihypertensive medications, but more frequent monitoring is required. Skin pigment changes are reversible problems and do not require special treatment but require psychological counseling.
In addition to medication adjustments, nutritional intervention and psychological support can also be combined to help patients better adapt to long-term treatment. Current international research is also trying to combine sunitinib with other targeted drugs to reduce the dose of a single drug and thereby reduce the expression of toxicity.
In summary, although the side effects of sunitinib are quite diverse, early intervention, appropriate dose adjustment and multidisciplinary team management can significantly improve the continuity of treatment and the patient's quality of life. Adequate communication between patients and doctors and improved awareness of side effects are the keys to safe medication use.
