In a pooled analysis of placebo-controlled studies in patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), a total of 2,047 patients received teriflunomide 7 mg or 1 mg once daily. Teriflunomide may cause acute urate nephropathy with transient acute renal failure because teriflunomide increases renal uric acid clearance. In clinical trials, 18% of patients treated with teriflunomide developed hypophosphatemia with serum phosphorus levels of at least 0.6 mmol/L, 4% of patients treated with teriflunomide developed hypophosphatemia with serum phosphorus levels of at least 0.3 mmol/L but less than 0.6 mmol/L, and no patients in any treatment group had serum phosphorus less than 0.3 mmol/L.
