Important indications for Trientine

Trientine(Trientine) is a prescription drug used to regulate copper metabolism in the body. It has a clear and stable application position in the field of liver diseases and genetic metabolic diseases. It is not a widely used conventional liver disease drug, but is used for specific groups of people and clearly diagnosed diseases, and has strong professional attributes.

From the perspective of indications, trientine is mainly used to treat hepatolenticular degeneration (Wilson's disease;rare diseases). This is a copper metabolism disorder caused by genetic factors. In clinical use, the core target groups of trientine include:

1) Children aged ≥5 years and adults with hepatolenticular degeneration, especially those who have been diagnosed clearly and require systemic copper depletion treatment;

2) Patients who are intolerant to penicillamine or unable to continue treatment with penicillamine, such as discontinuing the original treatment plan due to adverse reactions, allergies or poor long-term tolerance;

3) Stable patients who need long-term maintenance of copper load control to reduce the risk of continued copper deposition in vital organs.

Compared with other copper excretion drugs, trientine works by combining with free copper in the body to form a stable complex, promoting the excretion of copper through urine, thereby gradually reducing the copper load in the body. It does not directly repair already damaged tissue, but by continuously controlling copper levels, it helps prevent further progression of the disease.

It should be emphasized that trientine is not suitable for patients with ordinary liver function abnormalities, fatty liver or viral hepatitis. It must be based on a clear diagnosis before use and is a highly targeted long-term management drug.
