Effects of Voriconazole on the Heart

Some azole drugs, includingVoriconazole (Voriconazole), have been associated with prolongation of the QT interval on electrocardiograms, and rare cases of arrhythmias (including ventricular arrhythmias such as torsade de pointes), cardiac arrest, and sudden death have occurred in patients taking voriconazole. These cases typically involve critically ill patients with multiple confounding risk factors, such as a history of cardiotoxic chemotherapy, cardiomyopathy, hypokalemia, and concomitant medications that may be contributing. Patients Potassium, magnesium, and calcium should be strictly corrected before starting voriconazole therapy and during treatment, and voriconazole should be used with caution in patients with potentially proarrhythmic diseases.
