Clofazimine is an anti-mycobacterial drug developed in the 1950s and approved for marketing by the US FDA in 1986. It is developed and produced by the Swiss company Ciba Geigy. It can currently be used in combination with rifampicin or ethionamide to treat infections caused by strains resistant to sulfone drugs. It can also be used to treat leprosy, erythematous nodular leprosy reactions and acute leprosy reactions caused by other drugs.

So, what is the dosage of clofazimine?

Treatment of multibacillary leprosy: clofazimine 50 mg daily, self-administered, and clofazimine 300 mg once a month, supervised. It is combined with rifampicin and DDS to form a combined chemotherapy regimen, and the course of treatment is at least 2 months, or until the skin smear turns negative. Different illnesses require different dosages and methods. For various types of dapsone-resistant leprosy, clofazimine is taken orally, 50 to 100 mg once a day, in combination with one or several other anti-leprosy drugs. Clofazimine is used for drug-resistant tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis, 100 mg three times a day, in combination with anti-tuberculosis drugs. It is recommended that patients take medication under the guidance of a doctor and not blindly take medication.

So, what are the side effects of clofazimine?

The side effects of clofazimine in the gastrointestinal tract include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea, etc., but these side effects are usually mild. Taking clofazimine with food can alleviate the symptoms. Patients with severe abdominal pain should stop taking the drug. The most common side effects of clofazimine include skin redness and pigmentation. The degree of side effects is proportional to the course of treatment and dose, and will gradually subside after discontinuation of treatment. Dry skin and ichthyosis-like changes mostly appear 2 to 3 months after taking the drug, and gradually subside about 3 months after stopping the drug.
