The nitrosourea alkylating agent carmustine chip implant can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and is often used for brain tumors and intracranial metastases. When a brain tumor is surgically removed, up to 8 pieces of this product can be implanted in the cavity created by surgery. It is the only new drug in the world to treat malignant glioma. Today let’s take a closer look at whether carmustine chip implants are effective in treating glioma? Are there any side effects?

From January 2005 to June 2011, a total of 820 patients were included. 33 patients (4.0%) were excluded. There were 787 patients in total, 354 in the implant group and 433 in the standard group. The median time from surgical resection to the start of radiotherapy was 8 weeks in the implant group and 4 weeks in the standard group (P=0.0001). In the whole group analysis, the HR of PFS in the implanted group vs. the standard group was 0.81 (P=0.005). The median PFS benefit was 2 months, 12.0 months in the implant group vs. 10 months in the standard group. Carmustine chip implants were associated with longer PFS in the total and subtotal resection groups but not in the partial resection group. The median PFS benefit was 2 months, 12.0 months in the implant group and 10.0 months in the standard group. The HR of OS in the implant group compared with the standard group was 1.06. The trial demonstrates that carmustine wafer implants combined with maximal safe resection + standard chemoradiotherapy may represent a promising first-line treatment option in adult patients with supratentorial GBM.

So, do carmustine chip implants have any side effects? Tumor drugs generally have side effects, but patients have different conditions and different side effects. The most common side effects of carmustine chip implants for newly diagnosed high-grade malignant glioma are nausea, vomiting, cerebral edema, weakness, constipation, abnormal wound healing and depression. The most common side effects of recurrent high-grade malignant glioma are urinary tract infection, abnormal wound healing, and fever.
